Ocean Sketchbook Doodles: Easy Sea Animal Drawing Ideas

Just keep drawing… but make it animals 🐋🦈🐮🦆

Some days I want to draw, but my brain is like… “draw WHAT?” So I started keeping a little things-to-sketch animals list in my sketchbook. When I’m stuck, I pick one animal, set a 10–20 minute timer, and just go. No pressure, no perfection—just lines on paper.

This post is basically my go-to animal sketch menu: a mix of ocean animals (because the shapes are so satisfying), plus a few cute farm/forest classics for when I want something cozy. I’m also sharing the exact step-by-step approach I use (super beginner-friendly), including the little tricks that make a doodle look “finished” without spending hours shading.

What you need (keep it simple) ✍🏼

I like to keep my supplies minimal so I don’t talk myself out of drawing.

Sketch paper or thick paper (anything that can handle a bit of shading).

HB pencil for light sketching and planning.

2B pencil (or any softer pencil) for darker outlines and shading.

Eraser for lifting lines (and saving the day).

Optional: a fineliner for crisp doodle vibes, but honestly pencil-only looks so good for animals.

My favorite “things to sketch” animals (and why they’re fun)

When I’m building a sketch habit, I choose animals with clear silhouettes. A strong outline makes everything easier—especially if I’m not adding color.

1) Ocean animal sketches: shark trio energy 🦈

Ocean animals are my comfort zone. Something about fins + streamlined bodies = instant “it looks like something!” even when the lines are messy.

Great white shark: classic torpedo body, dramatic dorsal fin, easy to shade the belly lighter.

Hammerhead shark: the head shape does all the work. Even a simple doodle reads immediately.

Nurse shark: softer, calmer vibe. Great for practicing subtle curves and a more relaxed pose.

If I’m doing a “recent sketchbook doodles” page, I’ll draw these three in different angles like a mini ocean lineup. It makes the page feel intentional without needing a full illustration background.

2) Whale shark doodle (medium difficulty, but SO worth it) 🐋🦈

Whale sharks look complicated because of the spots, but the base shape is actually really approachable. I treat it like a clean doodle tutorial with a few simple construction steps.

Step 1: Create a curved line for the back.

Step 2: From the top of the curved line, add two dashed guideline lines (I leave a bigger gap near the start so the head area feels wider).

Step 3: From the bottom of the curved line, draw a detached line going up diagonally to start forming the belly.

Step 4: Add two triangle shapes to fill the gaps created by those dashed lines (this helps shape the head and top fin area).

Step 5: Draw a rounded triangular shape to connect the lower half (this is where it starts looking like a real whale shark body).

Step 6: Make the caudal fin (tail) using one curved line, then two more curved lines connecting it back into the tail.

Step 7: Add a curved line and two small triangles for fins.

Step 8: Draw an oval mouth, a dot for an eye, two short curved gill lines, and then stipple dots for the whale shark pattern.

The stipple dots are my favorite part because they instantly give texture. I start with fewer dots than I think I need, then slowly add more so I don’t overdo it.

3) Shaded jellyfish sketch (the “trust the process” animal) 🪼

Jellyfish are perfect when I want something flowy and calming. Also: shading a jellyfish teaches patience in the best way. The secret is building from light to dark instead of trying to make it dramatic right away.

For this sketch you will need: thick paper/sketch paper, an HB pencil, and a 2B pencil for darker outline + shading.

Step 1: Lightly sketch the top of the jellyfish with HB. Keep the dome simple.

Step 2: Sketch the bottom portion of the jellyfish (the frilly edge). This is where I add my own design—some jellyfish look ruffled, some look smooth.

Step 3: Create small circles on the top of the jellyfish (light to dark circles). This detail makes it feel dimensional.

Step 4: Add squiggly lines under the jellyfish for the tentacles. I mix thick and thin lines so it feels more natural.

Step 5: Switch to 2B and darken the outline throughout the drawing (not all at once—just where I want emphasis).

Step 6: Use 2B strokes going down into the tentacles to create dark-to-medium shading. I keep the ends lighter so it looks glowy.

Step 7: Add string-like lines in a few tentacles, then darken selectively. The contrast is what sells the “underwater” vibe.

Extra tip: Be patient with the shading and the darkness-to-light transition at the end of the tentacles. When I rush this part, it looks muddy. When I slow down, it looks magical.

4) Cow sketch (cute + structured, great for learning faces) 🐮

Cows are underrated for sketch practice because the features are simple, but the head shape matters a lot. When I want a guided approach, I break it into little checkpoints.

My cow breakdown (the way I remember it):

Nose: Start with the snout area so the face has an anchor.

Chin: Add a soft curve under the snout.

Head shape: Build the skull shape around the snout (this stops the face from looking “stuck on”).

Ears: Two simple ear shapes—slightly angled gives more personality.

Body and markings: I keep the body shape simple and let the spots do the storytelling.

Eyes (and optional hair): Eyes are tiny but change everything. I sometimes add a little hair tuft… and sometimes I remove it if it feels too busy. That’s allowed!

Finishing touches: A few extra lines for nostrils, inner ears, and spot edges. Done.

When I want it extra cute, I pick a theme (like a pink lemonade vibe) and keep the shapes rounder. Round shapes = instant softness.

5) Owl doodle (simple shapes, big payoff) 🦉

Owls are amazing for doodling because they’re basically circles + hooks + almond eyes. It’s one of those drawings that looks impressive even if it’s super simple.

Step 1: Start with a circular shape.

Step 2: Draw two hook-shaped lines facing each other inside the circle.

Step 3: Connect them with a curved line, then add a curved line through the middle of each hook.

Step 4: Make two half circles (this starts forming the facial disk).

Step 5: Draw two curved lines to shape the face.

Step 6: Add two almond shapes near the top for eyes.

Step 7: Draw two curved triangles above (little feather tufts / brows).

Step 8: Add a curved line through the lower part of the circle.

Step 9: Draw the eyes, nostrils, a small mouth/beak, and decorate with spots.

The spots are my favorite “instant texture” trick. If the owl looks too plain, spots fix it.

6) Duck doodle (easy, quick, and always looks happy) 🦆

Ducks are my go-to when I only have five minutes. The body is basically one smooth curve, and the details are minimal.

Step 1: Draw a curved line.

Step 2: Draw a diagonal line connecting from the bottom of the curved line.

Step 3: Draw two straight lines going up from the body. Make the line attached to the diagonal longer (this helps the neck/head area).

Step 4: Draw another curved line from the longer line.

Step 5: Make a rounded triangle shape for the head/beak connection, extend lines to connect if needed.

Step 6: Add a dot nostril, an eye, and a curved line for a wing.

Step 7: Draw a straight line with short lines extending for feet.

Step 8: Connect the toes with curved lines.

If the duck looks stiff, I tilt the head slightly or make the wing line more curved. Tiny changes = big personality.

7) Bonus cute animals: goat, deer, panda (when I want variety) 🐐🦌🐼

Sometimes I want a full “cute animals” page, so I rotate these three because they each teach something different.

Goat: Start with an oval head and facial guidelines in the direction it’s facing. Add horns at the end and draw texture lines on them. Horn texture makes it look finished fast.

Deer: Big oval body slightly overlapping the head. The antlers are the star—keep the body simple and let the antlers be dramatic.

Giant panda: Rounded trapezoid head, then two small ovals below for back legs. Add a curve on the head to define the snout. Finish with markings on face/chest/legs. Pandas are basically “shapes + patterns,” which is perfect for doodling.

How I make animal sketches look cleaner (without spending forever)

1) Start lighter than you think (HB only). If my first lines are dark, I get scared to fix anything.

2) Commit at the end (2B outline). I only darken the final silhouette and a few key details (eyes, gills, fin edges, nostrils).

3) Texture = instant upgrade. Spots on an owl, stipple dots on a whale shark, circles on a jellyfish dome, markings on a cow or panda. Texture makes it feel intentional.

4) Pick one “focus area.” For example: whale shark spots, jellyfish shading, deer antlers. When one part is detailed, the rest can stay simple and still look good.
